Wine and Art for the Ages

Castello Romitorio in Montalcino combines these two worlds in deep ways

Back in the 1980s Italian artist Sandro Chia was one of my art heroes for his bold, physical, mythological paintings as part of the so called Transvanguardia movement. It was an answer to cold minimalism and pop that at the time I thought spoke at some human level.

Around that time Chia became a dad and traded some paintings for a hilltop castle in Montalcino.

His son Filippo grew up to take over winemaking at Castello Romitorio, making some stellar Brunellos and Rossos.

A few weeks ago I travelled to Tuscany and Romitorio — a living sculptural collage of Chia’s work — to talk with Filippo and Sandro about light, chiaroscuro and Sangiovese. And about myth, poker and wine.
